Description
PGEZ Zero is a STEM Maker and Developer SDK board, based on an PCA9671 GPIO Expander wrapped in a compact mechanical Pi Zero form.
What is PGEZ?
PGEZ Zero is a new STEM Maker and Developer SDK board, based on an PCA9671 GPIO Expander, wrapped in a compact mechanical Pi Zero form.
PGEZ Zero is ideal for:
- Educational and Classroom projects.
- Battery powered projects such as Robotics, Drones, Cars and Vehicles, Boats and University Projects.
- Farming and Agricultural Projects.
- Industrial applications, Test Systems and Development

Stackable Design Features
PGEZ Zero has been design to be stackable. In fact, you could in theory stack 64 x PGEZ boards, each with its own I2C address, selectable using the provided DIP Switches.
Interfacing
The PGEZ Zero has been designed to be as flexible as possible, providing easy interfacing support to, and not exclusively:
- Raspberry Pi (and other flavours)
- Espressif ESP
- Arduino
- ARM
- STM32
- AVR
- Microchip PIC
- GROVE EcoSystem
- Others..
LED GPIO
The PGEZ Zero includes low current LEDs on each output, so you quick see the state of the GPIO
Features
PGEZ Zero features the new PCA9671 GPIO Expander.
- PCF8575 Replacement
- 16 GPIO Ports (Inputs or Outputs)
- 64 I2C Addresses
- Selectable 3V3 or 5V
- GPIO 5V Tolerant Inputs
- Low Current LED on each GPIO (can be disabled)
- Hardware and Software Resets
- Supports 400 kHz and 1 MHz I2C Bus
- Stackable design (up to 64 boards/addresses)
- Hardware reset via Pi Header, or User Button
- WS2812 RGB LED, via Pi Header GP18
GPIO Pin Headers
The PGEZ Pin Header provides GND, GPIO and VCC (which can be selected as 3V3 or 5V).
As a single board, you could solder the provided 3 x 16 Pin Headers.
In a stacked project, angled Pin Headers could be separately purchased and fitted, so allow easy access to all 16 GPIOs.
Software Coding Support
PGEZ Zero is supported in various development environments including:
- PlatformIO
- Arduino IDE
- Python
- C Libraries
- Others
PCA9671 Libraries are available for for Arduino and Raspberry Pi. The PCA9671 is a replacement product for the PCF8575 and shares most commands. It does though additionally have a hardware reset.
